About Us

the cottage

The Little White Beach Cottage is a unique, cosy, old fisherman’s cottage with simple décor, a large deck, a great view of the ocean & the breakers that is just a stroll away from the beach. Situated two streets above the Surfers beach, in the oldest, leafiest part of Ballito, the cottage is nestled in a quiet neighbourhood. It is equipped with 2 air-conditioned double bedrooms and a TV lounge that can sleep up to two kids. Fully serviced by arrangement & great for chilling, romantic getaways, family vacations as well as getting the experience to live like a local – especially if you are a surfer or love travelling with your pets!

The space

The cottage is the second oldest property in the area, with an intimate atmosphere and a wonderful view of the ocean. Watch dolphins from the deck, as well as whales, but only during season! The cottage can comfortably sleep two couples and up to 2 kids.

Guest access

Stroll 200m down the road and pick your beach: Willard’s Beach has lifeguards, surfers and Sunrise Beach is dog friendly, just make sure to bring their leashes.

Other things to note

The cottage is at once rustic, simple and contemporary, sunny, breezy, charming and romantic. Both lounges have stacking doors that completely open onto the deck overlooking the ocean below. There is a laptop friendly workspace and small pets are welcome. A built in barbecue is right next to the deck, with an outside dining table that seats 6. This ensures that the line between bringing the outdoors inside and bringing the interior outside is perfectly blurred! The cottage is fully equipped incl. quality hypoallergenic linen & towels and is fully serviced by arrangement.

Dolphin Coast, KZN, SA

The property is a home to a number of very old trees and houses 100’s of different varieties of small wildlife. Woodpeckers and Purple-Crested Louries are common visitors and can be observed all year around. Green Pigeons visit every May and stay a month long but if the rain comes late in the season, the pigeons arrive later too! A family of mongooses settled here long before us, so we try not to disturb them. Please don’t leave your food left overs outside overnight; they will wake you up as they have their breakfast at sunrise.

Getting around

The cottage is 15 minutes away from the King Shaka airport. We offer 1 single lock-up garage and open parking area for up to 3 vehicles on a very steep driveway, (you don’t need a 4X4 but you need to be an experienced driver). Regret, no public transport.

history

In pre-colonial times various Nguni tribes inhabited the area now known as Ballito. Little White Beach Cottage, formerly known as Lightsout, was built in the late 1940’s. What is now known as the town of Ballito used to be a part of a large sugarcane farm owned by Basil Townsend. Dr. Eddie Rubenstein, a developer from Johannesburg visited the region and was captivated by the spluttering of fisherman’s cottages, of which Lightsout was one. He became obsessed with the idea to successfully negotiated with Basil to purchase 200 acres. The essential infrastructure was quickly established, the plots were selling like hot cakes at as little as R790 and the rate of 70 per day. Today, Ballito is a thriving hub for tourists and locals. With dozens of small, family businesses, fun in-door, and out-door activities, child-friendly, pet friendly and adult-only spaces, Ballito is the perfect town for a family, a group of friends, or a couple to get away from everyday life.
